Job description
When considering applications for the professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document original scientific work at international level within the area of molecular parasitology with an emphasis on vector borne diseases. Moreover, the applicant should document significant contributions to research capacity development in sub-Saharan Africa.

The professor will teach relevant courses at the department and as well spearhead the strategy of the department to extend and consolidate the collaboration with institutions in sub-Saharan Africa regarding research and capacity development within biomedical and public health research.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of students at bachelor, master and PhD level
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments
  • Heading a research capacity building program between Universities in Denmark and universities in the South
  • Heading one or more national or international funded research projects with a focus on malaria and/or other vector-borne diseases
The Professor will be attached to The Centre for translational Medicine & Parasitology (https://cmp.ku.dk), which is embedded at the Department. Currently, the research groups at the Centre mainly work on malaria with an emphasis on Plasmodium falciparum infections. The work ranges from molecular studies on host parasite interactions aiming at defining new vaccine targets to clinical studies and optimising the use of anti-malaria drugs including surveillance of antimalarial drug resistance. The aim is to provide knowledge that can guide malaria vaccine development or improve the curative and prophylactic treatments of malaria.

Required qualifications
Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of academic discipline
  • Leadership skills and extended experience in collaborative research and research capacity building projects in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Document shared knowledge with the rest of society through public channels
  • Provide research-based teaching
The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
The position is a permanent position.

The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2025.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The Dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
